2007: Enterprise Challenge Activities Week 2nd, 3rd and 4th July 07

RTC North delivered three one day 'Inside Industry' sessions to Year 8.

The aims of the activities were to:

  • Encourage the workforce of tomorrow to develop new skills and experiences
  • Explore the spirit of enterprise and what it means
  • To build a culture of enterprise and encourage young people to be entrepreneurial and creative.

Objectives:

  • Work in teams
  • Develop new skills and experiences
  • Explore the spirit of enterprise and what it means
  • Discover why businesses succeed
  • Think creatively
  • Use enterprising skills to design new products of the future
  • Present ideas to peers and teachers
  • Meet business experts

Programme for each day included the following:

  • Studying enterprising people
  • Setting up a business
  • Designing Skyscrapers
  • Presenting/Selling their ideas to business mentors.

We have received very positive comments from our Year 8 students who thoroughly enjoyed their 'Inside Industry' day at Temple Park and described the event as "Interesting and fun."

2006: Enterprise Challenge

During activities week all Year 10 students took part in an Enterprise Challenge. The challenge was hosted on three separate days by the Enterprise Company Smart for Business. The students were put into groups and asked to perform as a team to complete the Soft Drinks Challenge.

Each group had to design a new soft drink aimed at either athletes, School children or a non-alcoholic adult drink. The students had to design, promote, cost and plan to distribute their product.

Each day students astounded Suzy Alderson, Smart for Business and Challenge Leader. They worked together with great enthusiasm and came up with some fantastic ideas and plans.

At the end of each day each group was required to give a short presentation of their product. Again most students overcame great fears to stand up in front of many of their peers to give convincing presentations.

Overall there were winning groups from each of the three days. Those groups will be making a special visit to the Coca-Cola factory in Leeds on Monday 11-09-06.
Every student who took part gained a valuable insight into the world of business and showed great personal skills.

The Enterprise Challenge was a great success and a valuable learning experience to all those involved.

I would like to give special thanks to the following people:

Mr Dodds and the staff at CASA ROSA
They provided a fantastic setting for our challenge in their superb restaurant on Fowler Street, South Shields. They also provided all 250 staff and students with a delicious meal and constant refreshments. Without their hospitality the event would not have been the success it was.

Smart for Business – Hillary and Suzy
Thank to both for their outstanding challenge. They provided all of the resources and facilities needed to run the challenge. They were both highly qualified and excellent leaders of the three day event. It was a professional challenge and delivery that engaged all who took part. suzyalderson@hotmail.co.uk

Carl Buckley – Urban River Creative
Thanks to Carl who took time out of his very busy schedule to judge our group presentations. His expertise in the world of business and enterprise is a great help to us in school on a regular basis but a special thanks for giving up his time to hear our students ideas and offer some advice of his own.

Scott Duffy and Keith Palmer
Thanks to Scott or governor and his colleague Keith for also taking the time to visit the challenge and helping to judge the presentations. Both men have very busy schedules and were still able to find the time to add their support to the event.
