Activities Week 2007: Year 10 "Design their New School"

<< Back

During activities week, the art staff spent most of their time with the Year 10 students. A company called Planning Aid North, (a charitable organisation - part of the Royal Town Planning Institute) also worked with our Year 10's, helping them to "Design their New School". Our aim was to help our students understand the processes that influence change in their environments and encourage them to be part of that process. This workshop took place mostly at South Tyneside College, but also at Harton Juniors and Harton Technology College.

The 3 day workshop provided an insight into the factors that influence the design of a new school. The students were divided into small groups and had to consider the design of a designated part of their new school on the existing site.

They watched a presentation that set the scene for the types of issues to be considered when designing a new school and they were then challenged to look critically at how a school functions, creating spider diagrams and design ideas.

The rest of the day was spent using glue guns, foam board and polypropylene sheets to construct their own 3D models.

The Planning Aid team and teaching staff were all really impressed by the enthusiasm of the students, delighted by the models they saw and equally impressed by the way the students all worked togther in teams. We hope you enjoy looking at the students work!!!!
