Art Exhibitions

The Running Line (Great North Run)

This is a photographic exhibition initiated and created by a contemporary photographer called JULIAN GERMAIN. The exhibition opened on Thursday 20th September 2007, but the work started a year ago!

Our school was invited to take part in this fantastic opportunity! Students from Year 7 to Year 11 were given a disposable camera and asked to photograph the 2006 Great North Run. Julian Germain visited our school during the autumn term (2006) and guided our students through the basics of what contributes to a good photograph and the meaning of contemporary art. He also showed examples of his work and discussed his photographic career with the students.

The students had great fun on the day running around with a camera and then spent the following 2 terms, after school and during lunch breaks, sticking their prints down in one great big line!

Julian Germain then took their work and created the world’s longest photographic display – with over 139,000 images – spreading 13.1 miles – the length of the Great North Run. There is even talk of it entering the Guinness Book of Records!

Many thanks to all the students that took part and an extra thank you to Kerry Laycock, Faye Turner, Amy Bowman, Mica Gauci and Stephanie Pringle for accompanying Miss Brunniche and representing Harton Technology College at the grand opening of the exhibition!

The Running Line Exhibition is at Saltwell Park, in Gateshead and takes place between Friday 21 September and Sunday 21 October 2007. Can you spot your photographs or are you on one of them?!!!
