Smart Adventurous Gripping Amusing Stories
Mini S.A.G.A.S was a recent competition from Young Writers which provided our students with a unique opportunity to be involved in a book publishing project. The students had to write a story in no more than 50 words, excluding the title. It had to be a proper story with a beginning, middle and an end.
Many of our year 10 students were successful – here is a selection…
There is a chance that they could win £1000 for the school once the book is published later in the year! |
The Pleasure of a Funeral – Samantha Burton
I met the love of my life last Thursday, I’m sure of it! However, my mother died last Monday; it was at the funeral that I fell. Nobody could remember him, no one knew him, so they said. My need to meet him overwhelmed me, so frustrating …… I killed my sister yesterday.

She could feel the wind brushing his arm as slow tendrils of blackness crept over her exposed body. Yes, maybe it was him after years of celibacy, maybe she would finally have a child. As he moved for her neck she didn’t notice the pain of death. Dracula struck again.
The rabbit was still. It has flown a long way. It’s jumper warn red but oddly wet dripping down the rabbit’s legs. A minute ago it had been held by a girl who bought it from a toy seller. She lay not so far away. Aftermath of a bomb attack.
The plant was green and blue and red. It had taken awhile to grow but had fought for life among charred ruins. It was oblivious to what was around it. The past that enveloped the square unaware that the remains had caused war. Life again at ground zero.

He felt weightless, he couldn’t help it, he started to float even with the feeling he’d left something behind. On and on he floated leaving behind the blood soaked operating room filled with people in blue coats hunched over a table. He floated till he came to a light and passed through.
The Resident Demon – Craig Hemingway
He followed my every move, the demon in my memory. The sadistic love he coated my soulless corpse with. He stood before me in a ghostly nightmare, corrupting, changing. My loves and hopes shattered in a barrage of mental torment. Now I ask this question, “Is that a father’s role?”
Adam Ratcliffe
When I first heard about it, I didn’t really care. I made a little sarcastic comment, laughed about the idea. When she announced that it was what had to be done, I wasn’t amused. I sat back watching others complete a task that I couldn’t do… a 50 word story.

The middle of the night and the house lay still, sound asleep in the darkness. The little dog sat content on the stairs, waiting, watching. When suddenly a puff of smoke and a great big beam of light. The house was stirred, chaos caused, a face staring through the smoke.
Candy, a child’s delight. What could be better than a great big lollipop. Little Jimmy beamed when mum took his hand, leading him into heaven. ‘Look,’ he gasped and gazed around and smiled from ear to ear. But the biggest surprise was the people’s eyes, when mum sat covered in chocolate.
Rude Awakening – Jane Atkinson
I awoke, I’m late for school, I ran down the stairs calling, total silence. People masked in black. I go out of the door, the street is at a halt past a hearse drives, out my door piles people. “We love you my dear.” I was no longer living.
Lonely, an old man sat watching the world pass, acknowledging people, yet on one replied. He goes for a stroll, seeing shop decorations ready for Christmas, it began to snow. The man smiled in contentedness, he tried to catch the glimmering flakes, they trickled straight through and fell on the pavement.

Diamonds. It’s all about diamonds she thought as they pulled up outside the jewellers. She loved him and they’d arranged to keep it that way forever. They clambered out of the car and went to choose their rings. Suddenly, she fell.
As gunshot erupted around him, he wondered how she was. He sent letter after letter, from the dank solemn place he now called home. As he roamed ‘over the top’ her beauty filled his head; his last thought. As they say ‘the course of tru love never did run smooth’.
Safety First – Sam Hogg
That little girl from number 23, with the twinkling blue eyes, today they seemed grey and lifeless, and her cheeky grin, vanished from her saddened face. Her bonny blonde ringlets, flattened, lying in a pool of blood, a man stepped out of his car, why didn’t she think safety first?
The Soldier – Jennifer Jack

The Performance
I stood on the centre of the stage with about one hundred people staring at me. All they wanted was a show. I was the one to give them one. “Tell my family I love them.” I said. I knelt down, put my head on the block and then silence.

The room stood in darkness. A think trickle of light enter. Two men broke the wall and entered. “Look what we have found”. They walked over to a coffin and saw the famous blue and gold mask of King Tutankhamen. A mosquito flew over and bit both on the neck.

The cold night had struck, the cruel wind cuddling small cold babies in their cribs. Slow heart beats increased rapidly, breaths were becoming impossible, shivering, shrieking bodies pounding against the crib, cold sweat dripping like ice-cream melting in the sun, but there was no sun here, beating hearts stopped.
She grabbed his hand from her pocket, held it tightly, close to his heart. She looked unhappily, glaring into his bright blue eyes. He recited ‘I love you’ following with a long awkward silence, looking deeply into each others eyes, his smile lost all meaning when she replied ‘I’M sorry.’
Safety First
Firstly they argued, as always. Secondly she went into the kitchen for the knife she had hidden for special occasions like this. Thirdly she plunged it into his heart. Then after packing her bags and getting the car out she drove away. Finally, she wondered why the brakes weren’t working.
Red – Laura Thompson
She stood, shock overcome. So much red. So much red, indifferent in her eyes, windows splattered and dirtied. A tear in her eye became more noticeable. The tear ran down her pale face. She stood with her mother’s make-up bag, aged only two. Red everywhere but her lips.
A Suicidal Egg – Hannah Reay
This once was just a story, a pleasant childhood tale what was true was never heard of, that suicidal egg. They thought it was an accident, just a high up fall. But the saddest thing was that he did it to kill himself. So sadly that this town was egged.
The Wood…… Alice H

Watching her, glass in hand, knife in pocket. As she took his glass away he talked to ‘The Boss’ on the phone. “Go for it,” he said quickly. As he left she shouted him back. He walked to her…. Knife clenched in hand… her breath quicker, as she backed into the kitchen… he took the knife…. Her heart beating; waves against rocks… he began what the boss had asked…. Chopping carrots.
