The ICT department is temporarily housed in a suite of rooms in our ‘Decant Village’ of mobile classrooms while the main school building is being refurbished (for October 2011). There are six well appointed specialist ICT suites (each with 30 networked PCs) in the department with a further two suites for other departments to use as well. There is a projector and whiteboard/screen in each room, which the teacher uses to demonstrate practical skills, and each room has a colour laser printer for printing coursework tasks. The department also provides digital scanners, cameras and class sets of headphones when required for lessons.
The aim of the department is to equip students with the skills and experience that they will need in the world they will enter when they leave our school. We aim to educate our students to use their initiative and make informed judgements about when, where and how best to use ICT.
Key Stage 3
All students in years 7 and 8 study ICT for 2 and 3 hours per fortnight, respectively. The Key Stage 3 ICT Strategy must be delivered in all schools and we have introduced an exciting new set of interactive materials called ‘ICT 4 Life’ to stimulate such learning but bring it up to date. The new courses include such topics as creating a web based ‘electronic time capsule’ a carbon footprint calculator and some basic techniques in computer games design. includes many challenging activities and will improve the ICT capability of all 11-14 year olds. There are 3 themes to the strategy; finding things out, developing ideas and making things happen, exchanging and sharing information.
Key Stage 4
The majority of students currently study OCR National ICT which is a coursework-based qualification, equivalent to one GCSE in each year of study. We begin the course in year 9 and it allows students to develop a broad range of ICT skills and experience which they can develop further at an advanced level, at Key Stage 5, or use in the increasingly ICT based world of work. We offer some exciting units within the course such as ‘Webpage Creation’ and ‘Designing and Producing Multimedia Products,’ including creation of digital videos.
We have also begun a Level 2 Diploma in ICT which gives the students a more vocational emphasis to their ICT studies, allowing them to see how ICT is used in the workplace and various aspects of society. It has been designed in partnership with employers from the IT industry and is up-to-date and relevant, reflecting the blend of business, technical, interpersonal and project skills needed by someone who is thinking about a career in the IT and telecoms sector.
Key Stage 5
A range of exciting courses is available in the Sixth Form in Harton’s new building, in the new specially designed ICT suite. We are currently offer the OCR A-level in Applied ICT, which further develops the students’ ICT skills in common software packages and teaches them about how ICT is used in business. We are also teaching the BTEC Nationals Subsidiary Diploma in ICT which has a much more practical emphasis, aimed at those interested in a career in ICT, including units in ‘Technical Support’ and ‘Fault finding and Diagnosis’ where they learn to repair faulty machines.
Business Studies - Key Stage 4
Business Studies is an optional subject at KS4. Students study for the BTEC Extended Certificate in Business, which is assessed by 5 coursework assignments. As it is a vocational course, all students are given the opportunity to research real life businesses through a variety of educational visits to local businesses of different sizes. Recent visits have been to Pentland Ltd, Cameron’s Brewery, Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, Hilton Hotel and The Customs House.
Business Studies - Key Stage 5
A range of exciting courses, including GCE Applied Business, Advanced Level Economics and Accountancy, have been offered since September 2010 when the school opened its new Sixth Form.
