On 21st January, 2011, Harton 6th Form was officially opened. A small ceremony was held in the 6th Form Lecture Theatre for the year 12 students where Joe McElderry X Factor winner 2009 and former pupil of the school declared the Centre open!
The ceremony started with a speech by Executive Head Teacher, Mr Gibson, in which he acknowledged the work of the team that helped develop the new building and declared his pleasure at the news that Harton was once again able to offer post 16 provision. This was followed by a speech by Joe who handed over a plaque that officially declared the Centre open along with the traditional ‘cutting of the ribbons’ to the Centre.
Following on from the opening ceremony, students and staff toasted the Centre with a glass of Bucks Fizz – (non alcoholic of course!).
The opening of the 6th Form Centre is a significant change in the history of the school. Traditionally, there was always a 6th Form Centre at Harton, but the school lost the provision due to Local Authority changes in the 1980’s. To commemorate the re-establishment of the 6th Form, the first cohort were asked to write a ‘hopes and aspirations’ note to place alongside some other key items in a Time Capsule which will be placed on the school site on the completion of the school refurbishment programme.
