Primary Liaison

Supporting strong foundations at KS2 is our mission. By taking this course of action we hope to:

  • enthuse and engage
  • aid transition by the raising of achievement in the specialist STEM and language subjects areas.
  • support staff development

How have we approached the support? (see topic tabs)

As our school specialises in Technology, it is a main focus of the school to assist and facilitate our feeder schools in delivering the technology based areas.  Primary liaison coordinators have been assigned to Design and Technology, Maths, Science and ICT.  As the technology based subjects can be difficult to teach without specialist equipment and facilities the coordinators all prepare projects, supply training, equipment and facilities to assist the Primary teacher in their role.

Design and Technology can often be challenging to provide without a specialist environment.  In 2005 the feeder schools were audited and stated that they had particular difficulties with delivering Systems and Control, Cad/Cam and Food.

In 2006 a Control programme aimed at year 5 and 6 was set up by D. Gill.  The feeder schools were offered the opportunity to be trained in the delivery of the project and equipment and computer programmes were supplied.  The equipment is rotated around each feeder school during the year and it continues to be successful in 2009.

In 2008 K. Johansen developed a Year 6 Textiles CAD/CAM project.  This was trialled in the summer term by J. Pratt at Westoe Crown and A. McStea at Hadrian Primary School.  The schools were supplied with sewing machines to use and the equipment, fabrics, software and workbooks were provided by Harton Technology College.  Both teachers worked diligently and the children produced some excellent pieces of work.  In the summer term of 2009 each year 6 class at is to be invited to Harton Technology College to participate in the delivery of this programme within a specialist classroom.

During 2009/10 we are aiming to prepare a Food based programme aimed at KS2 pupils.

Maths is a core subject and as such is studied by every pupil in the school from Year 7 to Year 11. Mathematics is an all embracing and pervading part of life. It helps us to create, plan, organise and solve problems.

Within the Maths department a wide range of technology is incorporated into lessons including the ever popular 'Who wants to be a millionaire' style quiz system. All students have a hand held unit which records their responses to questions posed by the teacher. This offers students an opportunity to play an exciting game and staff the opportunity to track student progress, thus target areas of weakness.

To discuss the opportunities offered by this system, please contact the Head of Maths.

By its nature, science, and particularly the technical language and procedures involved in the scientific enquiry strand of the curriculum, make high demands on the non-specialist teacher. The science community teacher aims to offer expertise and guidance to primary school teachers to help enhance their skills and knowledge to develop the subject and ultimately raise student achievement. It also aims to enthuse and motivate children by delivering science in a way which emphasises its true nature and value in real scientific contexts. Fun and the “wow” factor through practical investigations are high profile.

Since September 2008 each feeder school has highlighted areas they wish to work on, this being practical investigations in the vast majority of cases. Each school has conducted practical sessions at Harton Technology College so the technical equipment can be made use of, as well as hopefully easing the daunting transition from primary to secondary school. The sessions have included Year 6 work on separating techniques and adaptations as well as Year 5 work on forces. Throughout the year, gifted and talented pupils from each school are also invited to spend a day at Harton taking part in enrichment activities with members of the Year 8 science and engineering club. This year’s activity will focus on forensic investigations and is eagerly awaited.

During 2009 science subject teachers from each feeder school have also been invited to take part in a Primary Science Enhancement Programme (PSEP), which aims to encourage a greater understanding of the use of science in the manufacturing industry and to enhance teachers’ use of scientific enquiry in the classroom
