New York Exchange

2008 - 2nd USA Cultural Exchange

Students from Ithaca High School, New York were once again in South Shields in February. They spent a day in our school and visited such places as Edinburgh, York, Newcastle and Durham.

Over the October half term, students from Harton Technology College returned to Ithaca High School, USA for the second cultural exchange.

It was an amazing visit!

Our students stayed with families in Ithaca for 6 days and then spent 4 days in New York City.

The exchange included a day going to lessons at the High School, a day at the ‘Ivy League’ Cornell University and a trip to Niagara Falls where we boarded the ‘Maid of the Mist’, which sails right beneath the Falls.

In New York City we visited Central Park and two of the nearby museums, we took a ride on the Staten Island Ferry past the Statue of Liberty and, of course, a trip to Macy’s and Bloomingdale's for some shopping!

Evening activities included a Broadway Show – 'Avenue Q', Madison Square Garden to see the New York Knicks beat Miami Heat, and a trip up the Empire State Building to see the city lit up at night.

All in all it was a wonderful trip – and an enriching experience that no-one will ever forget.

Harton Technology College/Ithaca High School Cultural Exchange

During the Easter holidays nine students and staff from Harton took part in the first ever cultural exchange with Ithaca High School from New York State.

The purpose of the exchange is to bring together students from different cultures and backgrounds to give them an insight into how each of them lives.

The American students all stayed with local families and spent a morning in the school. Where they took part in Year 9 assembly and toured the school, visiting a number of classrooms on the way.

Also during the exchange, group educational visits were arranged to York, Durham, Newcastle and the Sunderland Stadium of Light.

The next part of the exchange is in October of this year, when our students will live in the homes of the Ithaca students, visit their school for the day and also find time to explore New York City.
