Dear Parents and Guests,

May I take this opportunity to welcome you to Harton Technology College Rugby home page. This section has been in discussion for a few months now and it's great to see things starting to come together. We have lots of exciting plans for this section so watch this space!

As yet another season has finished, it is time to reflect on our progress both on and off the field. Our fixture card gets more and more difficult every year but we are still able to more than compete with some of the best rugby playing schools in the North of England. For the first time in years we have played some 'sevens' rugby, being invited to both the Terrington Hall and Durham School competitions. We acquitted ourselves admirably at both events and have been invited back next year. The boys involved certainly benefited from the experience.

Countless training sessions have taken place, in all conditions, and it is worth remembering that people are not born with talent, only potential, and bridging that gap can take many years of blood sweat and tears.

With all the problems highlighted in the media concerning children's health and lack of respect it is refreshing to see so many boys playing rugby. The game can be ferocious at times with hard tackles and a lot of physical contact but the players remain calm, respect the referees decision, applaud each other from the field and shake hands, regardless of the result. I strongly believe that school sport, played correctly, will play a significant role in a child's physical and moral development.

Last summer we undertook a highly successful tour to Canada and America. I am sure the boys involved will have memories that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. To go undefeated and not concede a single point was an exceptional effort. Fundraising for further tours has exceeded £25,000 this year and preparations for this summers tour to Florida are complete. Perhaps most important is the fact that there are over one hundred boys at Harton Technology College enjoying playing rugby and benefiting from the experience.
