Year 10 - Rugby Match Reports

Year 10 - Rugby Match Reports

HARTON 7 | RGS 15

Again, the game was played at a very high pace.

The Harton forwards never really seemed to get into the game, although man-for –man, we were arguably bigger and stronger.

We looked tired and at times and at looked like at times we were drifting in and out of the game.

The backs had very little space to run into as they were getting a lot of slow ball and they didn’t really use the wind to their advantage in the first half.

Things that we need to work on:-

  • Quicker distribution from rucks /mauls to backs/forwards (halfbacks need to work on this)
  • Better use of wind to gain field position
  • Forwards need to show more ‘heart’ in contact situations
  • Try to start switching play of second phase possession (rucks /mauls) – we had many opportunities to attack poorly defended areas.
  • Improved body positioning in rucks (presentation and also supporting body height).
  • Improved speed of rucks (reduce the time that the ball is left un protected)

HARTON 50 | PRUDHOE H.S 0 [Saturday 4th November]

We simply played some awesome rugby. The handling and running lines at times were outstanding particularly in such windy conditions. The half-back pairing of Harry Mellish and Christopher Baynes were tremendous with excellent decision making and distribution throughout. Michael Thompson ran with purpose and linked well with others around him. We will play against stronger opponents but the clinical way in which we approached this game was very encouraging. Our opponents played with spirit and were a credit to their school.

Another fine performance from our side who continue to play some quality rugby.. The forwards provided some excellent possession which the backs used to very good effect.

Anthony Wakefield caused all kinds of problems with his pace and power and coupled with Sam Hughes in the centre they are a fine pairing. As usual the half-backs ran the game well and Grant Pressling at full-back dealt with any kicks with assurance. We are winning a lot of ball with solid rucking but we need this to be ‘quicker’ ball. We must drive past the ball in numbers and move the ball away from the contact area quicker.

Our defence around the ruck was good but we could counter ruck better and our defence out wide needs to be tighter.

This was as the score line suggests a very one sided game. However credit must be given to our players who produced some outstanding, disciplined, rugby. Every player was comfortable with the ball in space and was aware of support around them. One area for improvement is the clearing out of the tackle area.

Against stronger opposition we will have to produce quicker possession for the backs.

A comfortable win for our side though our opponents did make us work hard throughout the game. What is particularly pleasing is the players response to what we talked about before the game. The forwards rucking was very effective as we are now driving past the ball. The backs used this possession to very good effect with some excellent handling. Also pleasing is the fact that we maintained a high standard of play for the entire match. This discipline will be crucial when we play stronger sides.

After two relatively comfortable wins we were looking forward to our first ‘test’ of the season. Last year we beat our opponents 28—5 in a tough game so this was a good opportunity to see if we had improved our overall game. The conditions prior to kick-off were very heavy rain, but a firm pitch. The forwards were asked to give a big performance and dominate up front as it was not the conditions to spin the ball wide at every opportunity. Every member of the pack can be proud of their performance, they were simply awesome. I am sure the three quarters enjoyed every moment of it as they had a constant supply of excellent ball which they used to very good effect.

Michael Thompson, Chris Whitehill, and Mark Wilson all had fine games but a special mention must go to Michael Whitley who was outstanding. Who will ever forget that tackle! Anthony Wakefield was as usual a constant threat and Grant Pressling was solid at full back. We must also take this opportunity to congratulate our opponents who played with spirit and determination throughout the game and deserved their try near the end of the game. Many positives but there are a few areas we need to look at. Losing the ball in the contact area and not presenting the ball correctly after a tackle. A few turnovers too many.
