Beamish Trip on July 06 27 th June 2006 Dear Parent/Guardian As you know your son/daughter is going to be visiting a museum during activities week. (Those going to France that week will be visiting a Science museum so they won't be missing out!). This visit is part of an independent learning activity, in conjunction with Creative Partnerships, as part of the History Department curriculum. The activity will be spanning the end of year seven and for four weeks in year eight. The intention is that during the museum visits, students will look for ideas to use in planning their own ‘museum'. The activity will include designing a museum based on a historical character or event. The intention is that students will be able to make use of their ICT and design skills as well as their historical understanding to come up with interesting and innovative ideas. They will be working in small groups in class, but it will also include homework at the start of year eight. The students will be observing and taking notes on a variety of aspects such as the layout of museums, the content, interactive exhibits, use of different media, what is sold in the shop and how museums are marketed. It would be very useful for your son/daughter if they could visit other museums over the summer, particularly the Catherine Cookson museum and Bede's World, both of which are about local people of historical significance. As a reminder, your son/daughter is visiting York on the 5 th July, at 9.00 a.m. and returning home at approximately 5.00 p.m. They will need a packed lunch to take with them.
