Maintaining a healthy body weight

The key is getting the balance right:
a healthy, balanced diet plus regular physical activity plus less time being inactive will result in a healthy body weight and a longer, better quality life.

A balanced diet

The following represents a balanced diet:

  • fruit and vegetables
  • bread, other cereals and potatoes
  • meat, fish and alternatives
  • a little fat and sugar
  • milk and diary foods

Remember….

You do not need to cut foods out completely and spend hours in the gym or on the pitch every night. It is a case of getting the balance right.

Eat more fruit and vegetables, bread, other cereals and potatoes and eat less fatty and sugary foods.

You should aim to do at least 1 hour of moderate intensity exercise every day. Moderate intensity exercise should make you hot and out of breath, you don’t have to do 1 hours exercise in one go, you can split it up into 4x15 minute sessions. For tips on how to make being physically active part of your daily routine visit www.mindbodysoul.gov.uk/phs/phymenu.htm

If you are concerned about being underweight or overweight speak to your school nurse – Val Bryce (she holds a drop in session on a Monday lunch time from 12.15pm to 1.00pm in Room 9B) or your GP and they will advise you on the best course of action.
