University | Tertiary / Apprenticeship | Harton 6th Form

Our second University Routes to Employment took place on Tuesday 26th October. We invited speakers with a university degree to talk to year 10 and 11 students and their parents about their route to their chosen career.

The aim of the event was to raise aspirations and to offer students some understanding of the opportunities that a degree can offer.  A wide variety of careers were represented:-

  • Andy Gough - Sales Manager, Orchard Information Systems Ltd.
  • Peter Hunt - Director, Orchard Information Systems Ltd.
  • Catherine Wass - Embryologist
  • Dave Harris - Chief Inspector, Northumbria Police, South Tyneside
  • Tom Brooks - Technology Teacher (ex Army and Mechanical Engineer)
  • Lynne Youssef - Counsellor
  • Jamie Collis and Caroline Walker - PR Consultants
  • Russell Hynes - Project Engineer from Laing O'Rourke
  • Max Wassef - Dentist.

The event was well attended and informative. We hope to have opened some minds to the slightly less obvious careers available.

On Thursday 19th October 2006 we hosted our first 'professional evening' entitled 'Routes to Employment - University' This was intended to be the first of a series of three Routes to Employment evenings, the other two being  'Apprenticeship, Modern Apprenticeship and Training' and 'Tertiary' evenings.

The format of the evening was meant to be semi-formal with the audience arranged in a horseshoe shape and sitting in groups around tables with paper cloths showing the school logo.  Tea, coffee, juice and biscuits were served throughout the evening.

The main focus of the information given was to show how, with a university education, doors could open and there could be more choices available to students. Some of the speakers had trained in one subject, but had often changed and ended in another field altogether. Often it was the level of study that was required, not necessarily a specific subject that employers were looking for.

Some students were primed with pre-planned questions to ask and speakers were informed of these questions. However, with an audience of at least 200 guests, either students were daunted by this and were too shy to speak out or they felt that their questions had been covered by the information in the talks given. This was the only negative of the evening and was easily overcome.

The speakers were;

  • Hayley Daglish -Teacher of Geography, Harton Technology College
  • Peter Ford - Jennings Plant Hire
  • Matt Joyce - Connexions PA
  • Karen Marmara - Lawyer,  Robert Muckle
  • Carl Buckley– Managing Director, Urban River Creative Limited
  • Michael Auty  - Technical Services Manager – Findus Ltd.
  • Ken Gibson- Executive Head Teacher, Harton Technology College
  • Ian Frame -Executive Director Organisational Development, South Tyneside NHS Trust
  • Jon Scott - Consultant Geriatrician, South Tyneside NHS Trust
