There is a statutory requirement at Key Stage 4 to offer work related learning experiences to our students including enterprise. As a Specialist School in the provision of applied learning, the school provides a wide and varied range of work related learning opportunities. As well as teaching many BTEC and other applied learning courses in school in subjects such as, Business Studies, ICT, Art, Spanish, Engineering etc, at Key Stage 4, the school works in partnership with South Tyneside College, local Work Based Training Providers and employers to provide collaborative learning programmes including;
College Work Related Learning Programme – Students following this programme have the opportunity to attend South Tyneside College one day a week throughout Years 10 and 11 to study a National Vocational Qualification in a variety of subjects. Subjects offered to date have included; hospitality and catering, hairdressing, beauty therapy, engineering, construction and uniformed services. Students also the have opportunity to attend additional work experience and to take part in industry competitions and have access to important progression information and guidance. This is an exciting programme which offers a wide range of experiences for our students in the world of work. We have had a number of successes including finding gifted chefs among our young people and hairdressing competition winners.
Young Apprenticeships- In partnership with TDR Engineering Training Company and South Tyneside College, the school provides the opportunity for students interested in a career in education to attend college one afternoon a week throughout Years 10 and 11 to study towards a National Vocational Qualification Level 2 in Engineering. Students also study a BTEC Certificate in Engineering in School and attend four weeks work experience. Students also have experts at hand to offer progression advice and guidance.
