Work Related Learning

School Industry Liaison Officer - Ms L Culkin

There is a statutory requirement at key stage 4 to offer work related learning experiences including Enterprise Education.

Preparing for a working life is important for all students – whether a young person wants to go on to University to become a doctor or a lawyer or wishes to pursue a career in catering or hairdressing, we will try to support them in their endeavours.

We are planning a "Meet the Professional" evening in the summer term of 2007 to introduce students to a range of professions such as law, medicine, education, police etc. This will help students prepare for applications to University.

We also offer a range of NVQ programmes in conjunction with South Tyneside College in Engineering, Hairdressing, Catering, Construction and an NCFE level one qualification in Uniformed Services.  Students who choose to follow this route also benefit from one day per week work experience in a local business or organisation to support their studies. This is an exciting programme that offers a wide range of experiences for our young people in the world of work. We have had a number of successes including finding gifted chefs among our young people, catering competition winners and young ladies destined for a glamourous future in hair and beauty.

All students take part in a work experience programme in year 11 and some students work on the E to E little Bruvver programme.

As a school we are committed to the ST19 project.  Look at the ST19 website to learn more about what comes after life at school. Links: ST19 | Connexions

We pride ourselves on our links with industry - they are getting stronger all of the time.

  • We are a TDR school with 12 students working in local Engineering companies.
  • We have approximately 70 students placed in local organisations as part of their work related learning programme - these include local garages, hairdressers, cafes, hotels, restaurants, local engineering companies - to name but a few.
  • We teach vocational studies across the entire KS4 curriculum and each vocational subject has links with local and national organisations.
  • We have all of our year 11 students placed in local organisations for work experience.
  • We have a group of students following the E 2 E little Bruvver programme.
  • We work with local training providers.
  • We have specialist professionals working with students and staff on specific projects such as web projects, enterprise ideas etc.

New commercial/industrial contacts are always welcome.
